About Every Woman
Every Woman Sierra Leone (EWSL) is an organization born out of a deep need for empowerment and transformation. In Sierra Leone, many women face significant barriers; poverty, marginalization, and a lack of access to justice. Out of this reality emerged a movement dedicated to changing the narrative. At the heart of Every Woman Sierra Leone is our founder, whose personal journey marked by sexual abuse, forced initiation into FGM, and domestic violence ignited a fire to change the system. Driven by that resilience, we advocate for women’s rights, provide vital resources, and create a future where every woman can pursue her full potential. Our mission is also to ensure that these stories aren’t just survived, they are a catalyst for hope, change, and a brighter future for all women. Our founder, driven by personal experiences of abuse and injustice, saw a gap and from that gap, Every Woman Sierra Leone was born. We are committed to uplifting women, advocating for their rights, and ensuring every woman has the tools and support to thrive and flourish.”
This organization was created from a profound recognition of the need for empowerment in women’s lives. In Sierra Leone, countless women face systemic challenges—poverty, exclusion, and a lack of safety and opportunity. Our organization rises from this reality, offering a platform where women are seen, heard, and empowered. EWSL is dedicated to addressing critical gender justice issues and empowering women and girls through education, advocacy and community support. We strive to create a world where women are heard, valued, and safe from violence and inequality.
Background and Mission/Vision
Every Woman Sierra Leone is a women-led organization born from the lived experiences of its founders, positioning itself as a powerful agent of change mobilizing communities to advocate for women’s advancement. Its work is deeply rooted in addressing the systemic challenges women face, with a mission to create a world where every girl is safe, respected, and empowered. The organization is led by Director Mariama Ama Navo Mbaimba, a survivor of domestic abuse, FGM, and rape, who emphasizes that real change happens “when survivors rise, speak, and lead the systems that once failed them”.
Aims and Objectives
EWSL focuses on challenging and ending deeply rooted harmful practices, specifically targeting female genital mutilation (FGM) and gender-based violence (GBV). They aim to do this not through top-down mandates, but through community-led solutions that respect cultural identity while protecting the health and rights of women and girls .
Every Woman Sierra Leone is committed to advancing gender equality, promoting leadership development, and facilitating social transformation. We engage in collaborative partnerships with communities, institutions, and development stakeholders to formulate and execute initiatives that empower women and enhance inclusive development. Our efforts are focused on fostering sustainable change and creating a more equitable society for all.
